Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says it has commenced implementation of the reduced import levy for vehicles.

The 2020 finance bill signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari provides for a downward review of excise duty on tractors and motor vehicles for transportation, as well as levy to be paid on imported cars.

Car import levy has been slashed from 35 percent to five percent; import duty of tractors has been reduced from 35 percent to five percent; mass transit vehicles and motor vehicles for goods transport from 35 percent to 10 percent.

Joseph Attah, Customs public relations officer, said on Monday that a circular has been distributed to all the service’s commands for immediate compliance.

“We have sent the circular to all the commands. Yes, we have started implementation. Once a directive is given, it means the Customs is set, ” Attah said.

Hameed Ali, Customs comptroller-general, recently said the service had received directives from ministry of finance, budget and national planning, to commence implementation.

“The act has been transmitted to us. We received the minister’s mandate this week, to start working on it, although we have to develop certain regulations and measures on how we intend to implement the law,” Ali had said.

“We have to change our codes to fit into the new law. You know that commercial vehicles levy is the only levy that has been reduced from 35 percent to five percent.

“So we have to change the codes to fit into the new law and we hope we’ll finish that in two days and the minister will have to look at it and agree that yes that is what we should do.”

Nothing is Wrong in Dialoguing with Bandits - Lai Mohammed

Federal government has stated that there is nothing wrong in negotiating with bandits.

Gunmen suspected to be bandits stormed Government Science College (GSC) Kagara, Rafi LGA of Niger state, and kidnapped several students, members of staff, and some members of their families, last Wednesday.

However, the executive governor of Niger state Abubakar Bello , had noted that his government was doing everything to rescue the victims, including facilitating dialogues with the bandits.

Also, during a radio programme on Sunday, Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, responded to Nigerians who had spoken against the strategy of dialoguing with criminals.

He stated that nothing is wrong in dialoguing with bandits, as long as the ultimate objective is to make peace.

“After war, people still sit to dialogue. So if some people have taken it upon themselves to visit these people so that they can embrace peace, I don’t think there is anything wrong with that,” the minister explained that the federal government will not pay any ransom to secure the release of abductees of GSC Kagara.

He also denied that ransom was paid to secure the release of over 300 students abducted in Kankara, Katsina state.

On the herders-farmers crisis in parts of the country, the minister said the government is taking steps to address it.

He said the steps include plans for intensive cattle-rearing to ensure that cattle rearing and crop farming don’t conflict.
